Penn Medicine & Virtua Health Proton Therapy Center
Virtua Health partnered with Penn Medicine to develop a new proton facility on Virtua’s hospital campus in Voorhees, NJ—the only such facility in the southern part of the state. LF Driscoll led the construction of this state-of-the-art facility, which was integrated into Virtua’s existing healthcare facilities and campus.
The project first involved removing the existing parking lot asphalt and excavating the site to the footing bottom. The team then constructed a foundation of micropiles next to the existing building, with auger-cast piles throughout the remainder and pile caps with slab on grade. The building itself is essentially a concrete vault, with six-foot-thick, poured-in-place concrete walls and three-foot-thick precast roof planks covered in a façade of metal panel and EIFS.
Due to the thickness of the concrete, our team very carefully scheduled and sequenced the project to account for concrete testing and curing. We also incorporated an intensive virtual modeling process for the project to ensure the concrete form work and MEP infrastructure is precisely located before the concrete is poured. These MEP systems included the mechanical and electrical systems as well as a new air handling unit, new emergency generator, and replaced sanitary and water lines through the existing parking lot.
